Water Sampling Guidelines
In order to get the most accurate results, samples need to be collected properly. Here are few basic sampling guidelines and tips to assist you (or download the file).

- Sterilise the tap outlet with a flame or an alcohol-soaked cotton-wool swab.
- Do not touch or otherwise contaminate the inside of the sample bottle or cap.
- When collecting bacteria samples, consider wearing surgical gloves to minimise potential contamination.
- Ensure that your hands are clean.
- Run the water for several minutes to flush what was lying in the storage tank or pipes.
- Rinse the bottle 2-3 times with the sample water.
- Use a clean, sterile plastic or glass bottle (available from Labserve).
- Don't use dirty containers, or milk, mayonnaise, chemical etc. as these will affect the results.
- The size of the container is important to ensure you have enough sample to run the analysis required.
- Place the samples into a cooler with ice for immediate delivery or shipment to the laboratory.
- Bacterial samples for drinking water must be received within 30 hours of being collected.
- Label samples correctly. Record information such as the location, date and time collected, and specify the analysis you require.
Regular testing of water identifies problems, ensures that water is suitable for the intended use, especially if used for drinking by humans and animals. You can track changes over time and determine the effectiveness of your treatment system.
